Deep Plane Facelift Recovery: A Complete Week-by-Week Guide
A deep plane facelift delivers long-lasting, natural-looking rejuvenation — but understanding what happens during recovery is just as important as the surgery itself. This guide covers everything: from the first 24 hours through to your final result at 6 months.
Quick Answer
Most patients return to social life within 2–3 weeks after a deep plane facelift. Swelling peaks at days 2–4, significantly improves by week 2, and final results are visible at 3–6 months. International patients can typically fly home after 10–14 days.
Surgery Day and the First 24 Hours
A deep plane facelift is performed under general anaesthesia and typically takes 3–5 hours depending on the extent of the procedure. Most patients are discharged the same day or the following morning. A trusted companion should be available to accompany you.
During the first 24 hours:
- Keep your head elevated at 45 degrees at all times — even while sleeping
- Avoid any sudden movements or bending forward
- Mild pain, tightness and numbness are expected and manageable with prescribed medication
- Drains and dressings, if used, are typically removed within the first 1–2 days
- Eat soft foods only and stay well hydrated
Week 1 — Swelling and Bruising at Their Peak
The first week is the most intense phase of recovery. Swelling and bruising peak between days 2 and 4. This is completely normal — it reflects the depth of work performed and does not indicate a problem.
- No heavy exercise, lifting, or bending — these raise blood pressure and increase swelling
- Sleep on your back with your head elevated
- Avoid alcohol and blood-thinning medications unless prescribed
- Short, gentle indoor walks are fine from day 3 onwards
Week 2 — Re-entering Social Life
By the end of week two, the majority of patients feel comfortable re-entering light social settings. Bruising can be covered with mineral or concealer makeup. The visible signs of surgery are considerably reduced, though some tightness and mild numbness in the cheeks and neck may persist — both resolve naturally over the following weeks.
Hair can be gently washed from around day 10, once cleared by your surgeon. Avoid hot showers and any heat directly on the face.

Weeks 3–4 — The Face Begins to Take Shape
The majority of visible swelling has resolved. Bruising has faded and facial contours are becoming clearer. However, the tissues are not yet fully settled — some areas may still feel firm or slightly uneven. This is part of the normal healing process.
- Low-intensity exercise such as gentle walking is permitted
- Wear SPF 50 daily — UV exposure can darken healing scars
- Hair colouring, perms and chemical treatments are still not recommended
- Sleeping flat is now possible for most patients
- Light makeup can be applied over healed incisions
Month 2 — Back to Normal Life
By the end of month two, most patients have returned fully to work, social commitments and daily routines. The sensation of tightness and firmness in the face largely subsides. Residual swelling in deeper tissues continues to resolve gradually.
- Swimming and moderate cardio can be resumed with surgeon approval (typically from week 6–8)
- Hair colouring is now generally safe
- Facial massage may be recommended by your surgeon to soften any firmness
- Scar treatment (silicone gel or sheets) can be introduced if recommended
Months 3–6 — Your Final Result Emerges
This is when the true outcome of a deep plane facelift becomes fully visible. As the deeper tissues settle completely into their anatomical position, the face looks naturally refreshed, balanced and rested — not operated. The result is supported by deep tissue, not skin tension, which is why it looks so natural.
Scars — hidden within the hairline and around the ear — continue to fade and become virtually imperceptible. With proper care, results typically last 10–15 years.
What to Avoid During Recovery
Following these restrictions carefully directly affects the quality and longevity of your result:
🚫 Smoking
Avoid 2 weeks before and 4 weeks after. Smoking reduces blood flow and severely impairs healing.
🚫 Direct Sun
Avoid direct sun for 6 months. UV exposure darkens healing scars and can affect swelling.
🚫 Heavy Exercise
No strenuous activity for 6 weeks. Raised blood pressure increases swelling and bleeding risk.
🚫 Alcohol
Avoid for at least 2 weeks. Alcohol thins the blood and increases swelling and bruising.
🚫 Blood Thinners
Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, fish oil and vitamin E unless prescribed. Discuss all supplements with your surgeon.
🚫 Pressure on Face
Avoid sleeping face-down, tight clothing pulled over the head, or anything pressing on the face for 4–6 weeks.
International Patients — Travelling from Abroad to Antalya
A significant proportion of Op. Dr. Urhan's patients travel to Antalya from the UK, Europe, the US and the Middle East. For international patients, the recommended minimum stay is 12–14 days. This allows for:
- Surgery day and overnight observation
- Drain and dressing removal (days 1–2)
- Suture removal (days 5–7)
- Post-operative check-up before departure (day 10–14)
The clinic provides a full international patient support programme including airport transfers, accommodation recommendations, and remote follow-up consultations after you return home. All post-operative instructions, photographs and medical documents are provided in English.
Warning Signs — When to Contact Your Surgeon Immediately
Complications after deep plane facelift surgery are rare in experienced hands, but it is important to know when to seek urgent attention. Contact your surgeon immediately if you experience:
- Sudden, rapidly increasing swelling on one side of the face
- Fever above 38.5°C (101.3°F)
- Significant pain that is not controlled by prescribed medication
- Discharge or unusual odour from incision sites
- Severe difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Weakness or asymmetry of facial movement (rare, but important to report)
Frequently Asked Questions
About deep plane facelift recovery
01 How long does deep plane facelift recovery take? +
Most patients return to social activities within 2–3 weeks. Full recovery and final results take 3–6 months as the deeper tissues settle completely into their new anatomical position.
02 When does swelling peak after a deep plane facelift? +
Swelling peaks between days 2 and 4 after surgery. It begins to noticeably reduce by the end of the first week and continues to improve through weeks 2 and 3.
03 When can I fly home after my facelift in Turkey? +
International patients are typically cleared to fly home 10–14 days after surgery, once the post-operative check confirms satisfactory healing. Remote follow-up is provided after you return home.
04 When can I exercise after a deep plane facelift? +
Gentle walking from week 3. Moderate exercise such as swimming from weeks 6–8. Heavy exercise and contact sports should be avoided for at least 3 months.
05 Is deep plane facelift recovery harder than a standard facelift? +
The recovery timeline is broadly similar. Deep plane surgery is more extensive, so initial swelling may be slightly greater — but because less tension is placed on the skin, healing quality is often better and scarring finer than with traditional techniques.
